About Mumbai Monorail
The Mumbai Monorail Project was proposed by the MMRDA with an objective, to support public rapid transit system such as suburban rail system and metro rail system. Scomi Engineering Bhd and its consortium partner Larsen & Toubro secured the USD 545.02 million, Mumbai Monorail Project from MMRDA in November 2008. The first 20-Km corridor of the monorail system is set to act as a feeder service to connect the mass transport systems like the existing suburban rail and the upcoming metro rail in the city. This complementing public transportation system is likely to de-congest the traffic in the area, improve connectivity and reduce travel time for commuters.
The Mumbai monorail project which is expected to be completed by 2011 is a 20-kilometre route between Jacob Circle and Chembur with one central depot and about 22 user-friendly and highly secured stations. Each monorail with four coaches will have a capacity to accommodate about 600 passengers thereby carrying nearly three hundred thousand commuters on a daily basis in the proposed route. At start of service the line will be operated with 15 sets of four-car trains running from 5 a.m. to midnight.
The Mumbai Monorail is also a green project as Scomi saves 200 tones of CO2 a day on the monorail.
